Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Clinical Educator the Nursing Assistant Trainee will provide general nursing care in Acute Care/Long Term Care to non-acute and/or acutely ill patients/residents while maintaining a safe and clean environment.

 

Must have the ability to react in a calm functional manner and make sound judgments within scope of duties when taking care of ill patients/residents and in the event of emergencies. Job requires the use of a Hoyer lift patients/residents who are non-ambulatory on a regular basis.  Mentally requires a caring attitude in dealing with both acute and non-acute patients/residents and families on a routine basis.  Job pace is rapid and there is constant pressure on the job to complete staffing assignments and answer patient/resident call lights. Maintain accountability for all actions taken. Accept delegation from supervising Registered Nurse.  This position is covered under the Indian Child Protection Act.

Responsibilities:

Actively participating in SEARHC’s Student Nursing Assistant program, while maintaining satisfactory performance and good attendance, which are outlined in the program syllabus. Promotes the SEARHC Seven Standards of Excellence.

  • Provides nursing care for the adult, and geriatric population, which may include:
    • Performs bed baths, oral hygiene, hair care, back care, dressing patients/residents, application of treatments for heat and cold; application of anti-embolism stockings.
    • Obtains and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse oximetry and intake-output measurements in the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Collects and transports specimens to correct departments.
    • Reports any abnormal vital signs and/or changes observed in condition or behavior of patients/residents and unusual incidents.
    • Performs other duties as specific to unit specialty.
  • Provides bed side care, which may include:
    • Repositions patients/residents, lifting and turning patients/residents, assisting in use of bedpan, urinal, commode, or emptying of Foley catheter; answers call lights; makes rounds to assigned patients/residents.
    • Ambulates patients/residents, transporting to and from various departments as required.
    • Assists patients/residents with meals or feeds patients/residents.
    • Assists patients/residents in the care of personal belongings, which may include: dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, etc.
    • Changes bed linen; cleans over bed table and bedside stand, straightens room and other general care as needed.
    • Assists Registered Nurse with readying a patient/resident for medivac transport from the department, which may include but is not limited to: making phone calls, copying papers and chart, and providing direct patient care.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment by:
    • Prepares nursing areas and/or patient/resident rooms and beds for receiving patient/resident admissions, transfers, emergencies or discharges.
    • Assists in and cleans utility rooms, cleans and prepares equipment for disinfection or sterilization;
    • Reports equipment that is out of order, reports other problems to Registered Nurse.
    • Handles clean and dirty linen and stores supplies in the service area as appropriately instructed.
    • Floats as needed to other departments in the hospital under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
    • Disposes of all solid and infectious waste according to organizational policies and procedures.
    • Replenishes supplies in patient/resident rooms and bathrooms as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by Registered Nurse.  

Qualifications:

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Must be able to follow instructions and demonstrate relevant scope of practice when caring for patients/residents by maintaining a safe environment with appropriate infection controls practices.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of proper equipment use.
  • Demonstrates knowledge between normal and abnormal patient/resident findings and communicates them appropriately to the nurse on duty.

Skills:

  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Competently maintains a clean work environment with proper infection control practices including equipment cleaning.
  • Provides general nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, residents, visitors, and other healthcare team members.
  • Assures confidentiality of patient/resident information at all times.
