Job Overview:

A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a para-professional support person with a commitment to promote and support the WIC breastfeeding women and her family during non-traditional and traditional office hours in coordination with our WIC offices in Juneau and SitkaThe support and promotion of breastfeeding promotes lifelong health benefits and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases for both mother and baby. Salary range: $14.67-18.64

Responsibilities:

  • Offers breastfeeding encouragement and helps women identify their concerns and barriers around breastfeeding 
  • Provides basic education, problem-solving and support, refers women on breastfeeding needs and support 
  • Responds in a timely manner to phone calls 
  • Reviews all contact and consults with WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, or WIC program designee on weekly basis in person, via email or telephone 
  • Documents all consults and contacts and accurately tracks time worked. 
  • Makes notes on every call made and accepted as to what was discussed and advised, notes will be made in the individual chart in the WIC Spirit system 
  • Makes appropriate referrals of women to pre-determined professionals in each community 

 

Other Functions 

  • Maintains client confidentiality  
  • Will work on their own cell phone and may be required to work in the WIC clinic with the other WIC staff.  
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

  

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required 

  • High school diploma or GED – required 
  • Successful completion of an Alaska WIC Program preapproved Peer Counselor Training Program and the State of Alaska WIC employee training within two months of hire date – required  

 

Experience Required 

  • Has successfully breastfed at least one baby for at least 6 months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding) – required  
  • Current or previous WIC participant – preferred  
  • Reflects the population served in age, ethnicity, education, and language
 

Knowledge of: 

  • Current evidence-based knowledge of breastfeeding. 
  • Basic services provided by the WIC program. 
  • Increasing or decreasing the breast milk supply, manual expression of breast milk; and safe and effective collection and storage of breast milk. 

Skills in: 

  • Exhibits good nurturing skills, as well as, model of good parenting skills. 
  • Skilled to maintain accurate records of contacts with mothers using correct forms. 
  • Skilled to accurately communicate, verbally and written, to clients and WIC staff. 
  • Skilled to obtain verbal permission from the mother prior to beginning interactions.  
  • Positive communication skills  

Ability to: 

  • Identify the need for referral to the breastfeeding coordinator or designee. 
  • Provide emotional support to mother and significant others through personal interaction. 
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and assess various positioning techniques for mother and baby. 

 

Computer Skills:   

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
