    Job Overview:

    Assist the SEARHC Dental Division in delivering optimum age specific prevention and curative periodontal and dental care for the SEARHC patient population. The employee of this position performs hygiene services on infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.


    The dental work environment can be both emotionally and physically challenging.  The constant pace and frequent contact with apprehensive or uncooperative patients requires an individual that is communicative, patient, organized and efficient.  Exposure to potentially caustic chemicals and pathogens necessitates an individual that is exacting in their techniques, careful and safety conscious. Postural demands of chairside assisting require adequate physical condition.  One must be flexible in their schedule to accommodate for the occasional need to work into the lunch hours, after work and in emergency situations.  One must be willing to accept the long hours, separation from family and stress of float-plane travel that are part & parcel of village field trips.


    • Provide age specific patient education in the prevention and control of oral disease stressing the importance of oral hygiene and home care. Counsels patients regarding nutrition.
    • Examination of oral tissues, performs deep scaling, root planning, coronal polishing of teeth, and applies topical fluoride. Measures and marks periodontal pockets. Performs x-rays, record pulse, blood pressure and temperature.
    • Coordinates and conducts dental prevention activates, including health fairs, sealant clinics & Head Start clinics.
    • Maintains hygienist supplies and instruments, including sterilization of instruments
    • Other related duties as assigned



    • Graduate of Two year Dental Hygiene Program
    • Bachelor Degree preferred
    • Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienist


    • Current Alaska State Dental Hygiene License.
    • If Commissioned Officer then current state dental hygiene license

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


    • Working knowledge of proper infection control techniques
    • Understanding of the principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies
    • Working knowledge of the proper use of dental instruments


    • Clinical hygiene skills
    • Oral and written communication ability
    • Accurate clinical judgment


    • Physically able to sit over patient for hours at a time
    • Dexterity with hands
