    Job Overview:

    The Community Dietitian will consult and collaborate with Women, Infants and Children (WIC) staff and participants as well as other medical and prevention staff as requested. This position will provide high risk care plans to identified WIC participants, and approve specialty formula in partnership with medical providers and WIC staff. The Dietitian will oversee direct nutrition services to WIC participants and provide technical assistance and consultation regarding nutrition services to WIC staff. The Dietitian works as a member of the SEARHC Registered Dietitian Team and may assist with medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to patients within a SEARHC medical clinic and possibly using distant delivery via phone or video conferencing. There is opportunity to provide community nutrition education at various venues on a quarterly or monthly basis.

     

    The Community Dietitian needs to be occasionally available to offer supervision, consultation, advocacy and implementation of programs during non-traditional hours, i.e. evenings, weekends and in non-clinic settings i.e., homes/schools; s/he also needs to be comfortable with intermittently fast work and intense pressure to meet deadlines.

     

    This position will travel throughout the Southeast Alaska region for 2-4 trips per year. These trips may occur consecutively or on separate occasions throughout the year, as weather and clinic availability permits. Continuing education and training will be offered as time and funding permits.  This position is a covered position in accordance with the Indian Child Protection Act (ICPA).  Supervises positions assigned by Supervisor.  Responsible for retaining records obtained during MNT appointments and WIC consults. These records will be maintained per HIPAA compliance regulations. 

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide high risk care plans to WIC participants and approve specialty formulas in partnership with medical providers and WIC staff. Services include assessment and screening, nutrition education, nutrition care planning and wellness and behavior change counseling. Dietitian will provide direct medical assessments via face to face encounters and tele-nutrition, conducting 2-4 community visits/year.
    • Provide consultation and collaboration with other medical and prevention departments and programs as requested. Collaborative services may include:
      • Consultation to Health Educators and other paraprofessionals in development and implementation of nutrition programs and promotional campaigns;
      • High risk (Womens, Infants & Children) and ENPR WIC consults as they relate to nutrition education, nutrition care planning and documentation;
      • Oversee direct nutrition services to WIC participants and provide technical assistance and consultation regarding nutrition services to WIC staff
      • Provision of general subject area expertise for Health Promotion nutrition activities.
      • Provide outpatient MNT in collaboration with other SEARHC departments.
    • Administrative activities for coordination of services and processing of patient information, including providing direct patient care and required charting after each consult.
    • Coordinate medical nutrition therapy activities in partnership with the Diabetes Program Manager and the WIC Coordinator. This will be reflected in the Diabetes Program work plan and the WIC Policy and Procedures and may include:
      • Update/maintain policies, procedures and guidelines related to Nutrition
      • Review/approve program policy procedures and guidelines
      • Assess/recommend program resources
      • Representative in Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) program team and advisory group
      • Develop annual program plan
      • Conduct consumer satisfaction survey
      • Assist with updating/maintaining diabetes registry
      • Update personal knowledge and skills in diabetes care/chronic disease management in American Indian/Alaska Native communities
    • Provide supervision to other community nutrition educators or nutrition specialists in the same program. This includes submitting annual employee evaluations per HR policy guidelines, approving timesheets, managing employees’ leave requests and work schedules, filling vacant positions, providing training and disciplining subordinates per HR policy guidelines.
    • Effectively assess and create a nutrition intervention plan based on client/patient’s needs and readiness for change and provide appropriate follow-up per best practices.
    • Develop and implement engaging nutrition interventions using evidence-based strategies, for example American Diabetes Association (ADA) approved Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) curriculum, and in partnership with other SEARHC programs and community organizations.
    • Practice cultural competency in the delivery of nutrition programming and understands how socio-cultural issues impact nutrition and health behaviors.
    • Work collaboratively with other SEARHC programs and partner agencies.
    • Accurate and timely preparation of required grant and program reports.

    Qualifications:

    Education

    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Nutrition/Dietetics or nutrition related field from an accredited school
    • Public policy and advanced nutrition education strategy(ies) training
    • Master of Science Degree in Public Health in nutrition and/or dietetics or other health promotion related field preferred

    Experience

    • Two years clinical nutrition and/or community nutrition work experience with specific experiences in management and prevention of diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases. (Will accept candidates with one year or less of clinical/community nutrition experience as a Community Dietitian I and set as developmental position until employee accumulates required work experience and achieves knowledge, skills and abilities as stated in this job description)
    • Supervisory/mentoring training preferred
    • Public speaking and presentation experience preferred

    License/Registration

    • Licensed Dietitian/Licensed Nutritionist in the State of Alaska or eligible for licensure in the State of Alaska and licensed within 4 months
    • Registered Dietitian in State of Alaska, within 4 months of hire
    • Must adhere to the American Dietetic Association code of ethics and complete 75 continuing education credits every 5 years as required by registration and licensure plus keep current on registration and licensing payments
    • Relevant training in maternal/child/chronic disease nutrition, community nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, stages of change and brief motivational counseling strategies is required within 6 months of hire
    • Valid Alaska driver’s license preferred

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge of:

    • Principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition
    • Nutrition care planning process
    • Behavior/lifestyle change theories and how to apply them i.e., brief motivational clinical encounters

    Skills in:

    • Oral and written communication including reflective listening skills and public speaking skills
    • Developing culturally relevant nutrition education support materials and community nutrition interventions
    • Quick, accurate assessment of a client’s nutritional status and development of a culturally appropriate, client-centered nutrition intervention/care plan to assist the client in meeting nutrition education or therapeutic goals

    Ability to:

    • Assess nutrition and health status needs of individuals and communities
    • Locate and review best available research findings for application to a community dietetics practice
    • Carry a project from its inception through its delivery and evaluation with great enthusiasm, professionalism and minimal supervision
    • Work on interdisciplinary patient/client care teams
    • Travel, including to remote Southeast Alaska locations
